Historical background to Kastela
Because of the beautiful Adriatic sea and the land which is between it and mountain Kozjak the bay of Kaštela has always attracted people. In the early middle ages it was occupied by the barbarians.
Kaštela was very important in the history of Croatia. In the 7th century, Croats settled here and made it the centre of their state. It was here where they converted to Christianity and built their settlements on this mild, beautiful and fertile land.
During the war with Turks, in order to protect themselves, the Croats moved from the villages towards the fortifications in the mountains built by the royals along the coast they moved from the mountain villages towards fortifications erected by royals along the coast. That was the main reason that 500 years ago there was a significant development of some twenty castles, fortifications, of which nowadays only seven are preserved. Around these 7 fortifications settlements sprouted and were finally merged together into the town of Kaštela.
Seven little stone pearls in one shell; the magic number 7 will always remain the symbol of richness and variety of this town.
